Impromptu Halloween Manicure 2015

Posted on Nov 7, 2015 in Manicures |

This is the first year in a long time that I didn’t dress up for Halloween.  I didn’t even decorate my house.  All of my energy was wrapped up in Disneyland.  Which is fine by me.  So the day of, Saturday, while I was waiting to hear from my friend Lorenza on when to come pick her up, I decided I had enough time to do something somewhat on-theme for a Halloween manicure.

I’ve pinned a number of Halloween themed nail art pictures to my Mani Mania board on Pinterest over the years, but I kept coming back to the idea of stitches in my mind.  Part of it was that I received a neon green polish, Orly Thrill Seeker, with my October SCRATCH Monthly Mani Box.  I also thought about using my Bundle Monster stamping plates that I bought awhile back (I got a set of assorted holiday plates), but as I looked at it I just decided it was too big of a production to do any stamping, especially not knowing when Lorenza was going to want me to come pick her up.

Halloween 2015 ManicureSo I started a simple orange manicure using an old favorite, Zoya Pixie Dust Beatrix.  I found, when looking at my various orange polishes, that it matched the glittery pumpkin on my t-shirt perfectly, so it was an easy decision.  Since my nails are fairly short (for me) at the moment, it didn’t take long to just get a nice clean orange manicure – and that’s as far as I was going to go.

But then, once done, I found I had time to kill. Then I got a text from Lorenza telling me what time to get her, and knew I had time.  I decided to give some art a try and do a simple jack-o-lantern face on my thumbs.  My downfall here was that, instead of using a stand-alone nail art brush, I decided I could do this with the brush in my black Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Striper.  Big mistake.  Huge.

As you can see, I couldn’t even really get even triangles to make eyes.  The mouth just got all derpy.  And yeah, the one in this picture is the one that turned out better  than the other hand!  So then, since this wasn’t the clean, simple manicure I had intended, I threw caution to the wind and decided to try out those stitches I’d been thinking about.

Again, I did this with the built-in striper brush in the Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Striper.  It’s not the best, and does not have the most details.  Despite owning a cheap set of nail art brushes, I’m not a painter by any means so I have no idea which brush is best suited for what kind of art.  A little intimidation caused me to just rely on drugstore striping.  I know better for next time! The stitches ended up chunkier and more uneven than I’d have liked, but as Rachel pointed out, Halloween manicure stitches don’t necessarily have to be even and perfect.  Nice save!

So what do you think?  A bit disjointed, but it’s something.  What method do you have for your nail art?
