Recap of Affiliate Convention
Monday
Jun 22, 2009
The first ever Affiliate Convention took place last week at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO. I came, I saw, I networked, I spoke, I left! All of my pictures are up on Flickr and Facebook, and video is coming soon! All in all, I’d say the conference was a success for both Paulson Management Group and for the event’s organizers. PMG hosted a classy party downtown which turned out to be the only party without women in various states of undress! We at PMG had a great time: Heather Paulson spoke on two panels, I spoke on a panel, and Tony Cohn and Clarissa Cutrell both moderated panels. Overall it was a great time to be had.
Unfortunately, the only panels I was able to attend were the Super Affiliate Strategies panel and the Final Debate panel, both of which involved Heather speaking, so I was focused on taking lots of pictures and video and not taking notes to share here like I normally do. But the plus side is that I’ll be sharing the video of some of Heather’s bits of knowledge soon. The irony in this is that Affiliate Convention was definitely geared more towards the education of affiliates and less about trends in the industry. With affiliates getting free entry, there was an overwhelming show that I’ve not seen at past Affiliate Summit’s I’ve attended. Paulson Management Group was the only OPM in strong attendance, which was good for us that we stood out, but a little frustrating to explain 100 times that we weren’t a network of some kind (almost all of the other exhibitors were networks).
We avoided the opening night’s party being held at a gentleman’s club (in full operation), and instead spent the evening in Boulder, where PMG is based and Tony & I (both having flown out from California) were staying. The following day, the first day of Affiliate Convention offered a huge turn out of affiliates wandering the exhibit hall floor, which was a quite intimate setting with about 20-25 exhibitors divided between full booths and table tops. We were always busy telling affiliates about the programs we manage that they’d be interested in, and it wasn’t just because we had plates of cookies! We took turns in the booth, making sure we all got a chance to network, wander around to check out the conference, and took PLENTY of photos with various affiliates and other industry folks that stopped by to chat!
Later that night, as I mentioned before, PMG threw a great party at Alto Restaurant in the lower downtown (LoDo) area of Denver. It was a fantastic venue that offered plenty of room for people to wander around and network. Jazz filled the rooms at first, but once the in-house DJ showed up, we let him do his thing and the result was a strange yet awesome mix of newer hip hop, rock, and some 80’s songs thrown in. We gave away a Flip Mino HD Video Camera to CPA network XY7 for all they did in helping Affiliate Convention happen. Afterward we headed to the WebmasterRadio.fm Affiliate Bash just around the corner, where libations and good times were had. The party had hired some wait staff ladies to be topless and painted with scenes of Colorado on their fronts and the logos of the sponsors on their backs. It was definitely interesting to see the artists work freehand trying to recreate photos of scenery and the logos (and some men behaving questionably as the night wore on).
The second day was a bit slower in terms of the exhibit hall, but I know the session in which I was a speaker, Social Media Marketing, was standing room only! I hear most of the other sessions were that way too. Moderated by Dave Taylor, our panel featured myself, Wade Sisson of PartnerCentric, and David Snyder of Search & Social. David trucked through despite a cold, and I forgot the last point I was going to make during the Q&A, but otherwise I think it was fantastic. I heard some good feedback, and if you were there and have more feedback for me I’m all ears! I’ve spoken before at the Social Media Marketing Summit back in October, but this was definitely more of an industry conference, so I was a tiny bit more nervous. But it was excellent practice for my upcomming panel at Affiliate Summit East 2009 in August!
Heather spoke on the final panel, which was billed as a debate but ended up more like an “Ask the Experts” panel, which was cool too. I busted out my Flip and took some video of her nuggets of information, which I’ll share soon. After the event was done, some people headed over to a final party, but thanks to Dina and MarketLeverage, Tony and I headed over to Coors Field to check out a Colorado Rockies game! So, yeah big thanks while I’m at it to MarketLeverage for being awesome and getting a sky box that had tons of food, a great view, and awesome company. Another quick shout out to Tony & my new network BFF’s NDemand Affliates’ Mike & Robert for the ride back to Boulder and good times.
Saturday our team decided to sleep in and skip the Webmaster Pub Social and have a team BBQ. Tony did a great job corralling the fire and the chicken drumsticks were awesome. The flight home was uneventful and I’m glad to be back at sea level and ready to hit the ground running with all the new stuff I picked up from attending!
Days 2 and 3 of Affiliate Summit East 2008
Thursday
Aug 14, 2008
Well, while I’d intended to recap each day… that didn’t exactly happen as you can tell. I do intend to post the notes I took from the sessions and the impressions to help everyone learn the great stuff I learned. Some of the more hot button sessions can’t be covered in mere bullet points, so it will take me a day or so longer to get my thoughts together for those.
I covered Saturday & Sunday (mostly… the ShareASale party was nice although I didn’t stay long), so let’s jump right into Monday & Tuesday, the busiest days of the conference.
Day 2 - Divide & Conquer
- In many ways this is the day that the summit starts. In the past the breakout sessions have only been on Monday & Tuesday, however this year they were extended to Sunday. Regardless, the keynote was given on Monday by Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker. If you didn’t want to jump up ready to go, you didn’t listen to what Mayor Booker had to say. It was a great speech, and I already posted my thoughts about it.
- The blogger’s lounge helped save my sanity. It was nice to be able to go in there in the 30 minute breaks between sessions & chat with people and do a little bit of work. Had the wifi worked out better for me (not sure if it was my ancient laptop or the actual connection that was the issue) I would have been able to get more posts up during the actual conference. I hope to have a better laptop by the next show I go to so I can just live blog it!
- Of the 3 sessions I attended, the best was Content That Kills. It was informative, had great tips and information, and there were good questions asked by the audience. I may be biased being a writer by heart, but it was good stuff.
- The other sessions I attended that day were the Performance Marketing Alliance Q&A, which turned more into a witch hunt filled with personal issues unfortunately, and How is Social Media Changing Affiliate Marketing, which apparently it isn’t because that question was never really answered. More on those in their own posts.
- The Great Affiliate Road Rally was a slaughterhouse win! With just three cars in it this time, the first place car took off like a shot and left the others in their dust! Congrats to them & to the others? Well remember the entry fee went to charity & you won’t feel so bad
- Monday night I had dinner with a lovely group of new friends & colleagues and then headed over to the LinkShare event at Tia’s. The event was a whole new group of people to talk to and had a great time talking some shop and reminiscing over Police Academy flicks with Wil Reynolds & Jim Kukral.
- Oh no, that wasn’t the end! After that we headed back to the hotel where we shut down the bar there and moved across the street to a small bar by the water & had a great time chatting with people and generally schmoozing before rolling into bed.
Day 3 - Epic Games
- It was a matter of sleep vs. sessions I wasn’t overly excited about attending, so I missed the Ask the Experts table discussions & The Future of Affiliate Marketing to sleep in & get refreshed for the Copywriting Clinic, which I very much wanted to attend. I hear I didn’t miss much.
- Speaking of the Copywriting Clinic, Lisa Riolo did an excellent job moderating and the panelists were excellent. I took 3 full pages of notes on this session, so you’re in for a huge post later on!
- The Ethical Issues in Affiliate Marketing session turned into the biggest fail session of the conference for me. The moderator Haiko de Poel Jr was doing a pretty bad job… usually when you’re the moderator of a panel of “experts” your job is to pass questions to the best suited panel member, not challenge the question back to the audience member who asked it. I have much more to say, so I’ll save it for later.
- The un-keynote was very relaxed and I actually got up & talked…which was big for me knowing that it was being video taped! I just hope when I look back at it that I don’t look like a fool lol.
- Luckily I was able to attend the Red Sox vs. Rangers game at Fenway with some fellow baseball loving conference attendees. Being a moderate baseball fan I was really thrilled to be there & the game was crazy! The Red Sox almost blew a 10-0 lead in the 1st but came back in the last inning to tie it up and then ultimately overtake the Rangers with an epic score of 17-19 Red Sox. We only spent a few innings in the stands before the rain started, but I got some great pictures and we continued watching the game from inside near the concessions so it wasn’t a waste.
- More bar shenanigans, then some piano playing until late kept me up long enough to decide not to go to bed before my early flight out of town. Overall what a great end to a great conference.
Final Thought - Springer Style
Overall I had the best time at this conference - not just because it was fun and I met a lot of terrific people who I’ve had the chance to get to know online and now have had the opportunity to meet in person - but because I just learned so much that I “get it” now. I remember back in February going to the Affiliate Summit West and having a conversation with my husband that I was actually starting to understand more and more about the industry and that I really felt like this was an industry I could get excited about.
And I have… and this reinforced so much for me how much I really like this industry! I’m back to the “real world” here and ready to conquer it!
Cribbed Content for June 6th
Friday
Jun 6, 2008
The first week of June is over and done with and summer officially starts in 15 days!
- Lisa Picarille reported back on the Affiliate Thing podcast from a dinner last week about a potential industry regulatory body, tentatively called Performance Marketing Alliance. They’ll be starting small, hoping to have a blog, board elections, and sponsorships over the next six months, and hope to launch early next year. They hope to be able to be ready with some kind of announcement by August’s Affiliate Summit East in Boston.
- In my all consuming quest to increase the page rank of this blog, I read a really good article over at Marketing Pilgrim on sculpting page rank.
- Search widget Lijit has teamed up with b5media to improve their service. Longtime readers will note that I had this widget up for awhile and when I redesigned it disappeared. I’ve put it back up for awhile - we’ll see if it does any good.
- Sam Harrelson started an Affiliate Marketing room on FriendFeed. I joined - should be a good place to share some ideas and links. Hopefully I get some good stuff to share with you next week!
- Are you a green affiliate? By virtue of the work-from-home industry, most affiliates are more eco-conscious in using less paper, not burning fossil fuels by commuting, etc. So now boast that fact proudly with a free Green Affiliate laptop sticker from Affiliate Summit. Just fill out your address and Shawn Collins will lovingly pack up one and send it your way!
- UnsubCentral and the Email Sender &Provider Coalition (ESPC) are teaming up for a free webinar/conference call on June 10th about abiding by the changes in the CAN-SPAM laws that are coming up. I signed up make sure PsPrint will be compliant - if you do any email marketing you should too!
That’s all folks! Have a great weekend - I’ll be enjoying fireworks tomorrow night at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland - hopefully also enjoying the A’s kicking the Angel’s butts!
