Online Marketing Glossary: Gateway Page
Sunday
Sep 21, 2008
Gateway Page (also Doorway Page):
- A webpage created in hopes of ranking well for a term in a search engine’s nonpaid listings.
These gateway pages uses organic search and SEO to their advantage, trying to make the most money as possible off affiliate links on the page without paying for traffic. Often these pages are created without a full website behind them, garnering the term “thin affiliate” sites.
Lately what I’ve been seeing is a lot of affiliates using Blogger to set up these pages. Instead of setting up a traditional blog in the true sense of the term, these affiliates create one long, keyword laden post and then put affiliate links in the sidebar. It doesn’t require any money to set up – no coding knowledge necessary, no domain name purchased, and no PPC campaigns to drive traffic. These affiliates are relying purely on the organic search results to drive traffic and are hoping to drive sales.

Welcome to May, my darlings. We’re inching closer to summer every day, and it’s starting to get warmer and warmer. Take a few minutes on this lovely Friday to check out my collection of crap from over the week! This edition is slightly longer since I didn’t do a CC last week – shame on me!
- Another satisfied customer! I recently offered some free stickers to Mike Rohde of Web414 & Rhodesign for him to give us a try and he loves them! Always happy to read about another satisfied PsPrint customer
- Zac Johnson, one of the first bloggers to report on how Joel Comm was going to make good for the recent eBook snafu, gave away 5 copies on his blog and I was lucky enough to win one. Thanks again Zac! I’ll most likely be cracking into it later this week when I get a bit more free time, so I’ll be sure to write a review.
- I’m tragically behind on WineLibrary TV. Not that important, but I thought you’d like to know. I was also behind on JangroCast, but I caught up last night. Good stuff!
- Affiliate Marketers are Giving Back! A rather large group of women affiliate marketers are going to be walking and raising money for breast cancer research. They’ve started selling space on their t-shirts in exchange for donations, so go contribute!
- I am AWESOME, and I can prove it! http://trishalyn.isreallyawesome.com/
- Sam Harrelson was disappointed by the Web 2.0 Expo. And thinks I should podcast more.
- Why the eff is eBay suing craigslist? Jordan McCollum at Marketing Pilgrim does a great job explaining it.
- Anne Kadet from Smart Money Magazine apparently received her journalism training from a dog. She wrote a “story” for the May issue quoting all the bad parts of the Jason Calacanis keynote from Affiliate Summit West out of context. Google is clearly her one and only “source”. Missy Ward’s reaction video is awesome.
- Joy O’Hare, a dang good blogger herself, reviewed my blog. Thanks for the great review, Joy!
All in all I’d say it’s been a good week!

I have no clue why this excites me, but overnight I received my first spam comment. I’m going to leave it up just because it’s the first! I guess it could mean that the content is getting indexed faster, which is always good.
What’s not good is Feed Burner. I know I’ve been critical of them in the past for a small jump in subscriber count, but last night my subscriber count was 54 and this morning it’s 32. Mark from 45n5.com responded to my outraged tweet that FB is just as good as guessing, so I assume it’s not really reliable. Which bums me out because I’d really rather have no reporting than inaccurate reporting. Oh well, just another thing to learn along the way.
I’m mostly worried that the switch from blogger to wordpress and the domain change has affected the subscribers, but I followed all the steps outlined by Feed Burner. And I subscribe to the feed myself and it looks fine.
As long as I’m pseudo-rambling here and you’re pacifying me by continuing to read, I’ll also mention that I believe I fixed the issue with my video not playing. I switched over to an embedded video from Viddler.com instead of Blip.tv and it seemed to work fine when I tested it. Unfortunately that does mean that the opening screen grab of me with my air quote fingers isn’t there.
