Algorithm:

  • A set of mathematical equations or rules that a search engine uses to rank the content contained within its index in response to a particular search query.

glossary bookThe algorithm is what powers search engines, and also provides websites with page ranks, Alexa rankings, Technorati authority, etc.  The algorithm often takes into account inbound links, outbound links, where the inbounds are coming from, where the outbounds are going to, number, quality, etc.

Online Marketing Glossary: Linkspam

Linkspam:

  • A company attempts to place as many inbound links as possible to it’s site regardless of the context of the originating site.

glossary bookUnfortunately, I’ve seen this before in practice.  Uninformed manager put their stock entirely into metrics, so that inbound link metric and page rank can be heavy hitters.  Professionals truly versed in proper SEO strategies know that the originating content matters almost just as much as the presence of the link.

It can be difficult to push back to overbearing and uneducated managers sometimes, so remember that you have your industry peers to help you to formulate convincing arguments for your side.

Online Marketing Glossary: Inbound Link

Posted on Aug 5, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing, Marketing |

Inbound Link:

  • A link to a particular page from elsewhere on the Internet.  Inbound links are important to SEO because many search engines’ rankings are at least partially based on the amount of inbound links.

glossary bookYour break from the glossary is over!  Inbound links are tricky as you usually have no influence on whether you get them or not.  A good tip is to submit your site to directories at the beginning to start building some inbound links, and make sure your content is good.  If you have excellent content, more blogs and other websites within your niche will want to link to yours.
