Online Marketing Glossary: Spamdexing
Saturday

Spamdexing:
- Also called search engine spamming. It combines techniques employed by some Web marketers and designers to fool a search engine’s spider and indexing programs to ensure that their website always appears at or near the top of the list of search engine results.
I’m sure you’ve come across this without realizing it. You go to Google and search for something relatively common and the SERP has listings near the top that, upon clicking them, you find have nothing to do with what you’re looking for.
This is because the marketers behind that website (usually laden with affiliate links and poor or scrapped content) have gamed the system and used these tactics.

Online Marketing Glossary: Gateway Page

Gateway Page (also Doorway Page):
- A webpage created in hopes of ranking well for a term in a search engine’s nonpaid listings.
These gateway pages uses organic search and SEO to their advantage, trying to make the most money as possible off affiliate links on the page without paying for traffic. Often these pages are created without a full website behind them, garnering the term “thin affiliate” sites.
Lately what I’ve been seeing is a lot of affiliates using Blogger to set up these pages. Instead of setting up a traditional blog in the true sense of the term, these affiliates create one long, keyword laden post and then put affiliate links in the sidebar. It doesn’t require any money to set up – no coding knowledge necessary, no domain name purchased, and no PPC campaigns to drive traffic. These affiliates are relying purely on the organic search results to drive traffic and are hoping to drive sales.

Online Marketing Glossary: Pay Per Impression

Pay Per Impression (PPI):
- An advertising pricing model in which advertisers pay based on how many users were served their ads.
This isn’t used as often since there can be third party interference in counting impressions. I’ve been told that search engine crawlers can interfere with the impressions, although I’m honestly not sure how accurate that is.
If you know a program that uses PPI, share!
