Online Marketing Glossary: AdSense
AdSense:
- An advertising program run by Google enabling website owners to display text and image advertisements. Revenue is generated on a pay-per-click basis. Google uses its search technology to serve ads based on website content and users’ geographical location.
AdSense is held as the golden standard of search marketing, above rival search engines Yahoo! and MSN. There are several gurus out there Joel Comm who write books on how to use AdSense with the highest effectiveness to generate revenue. I won a copy of his latest eBook AdSense Secrets 6 from blogger & super affiliate Zac Johnson, but I have yet to read it. Which is probably why my all-time AdSense earnings (ok all time is only the last couple of months) are sitting at a jealousy-inducing $6.56!

Free Toolsday for June 10th
OK it’s TECHNICALLY still the 10th here in California, so here’s this week’s free tool.
SEO Quake
is an extension for both Internet Explorer and Firefox. It’s a great tool for webmasters to improve their websites, but also a terrific tool for an affiliate manager doing due diligence on the websites their affiliates list.
My favorite feature is the Whois tool. I use this to check the registrant information on websites on affiliate applications before I approve them. I use the whois data to try to weed out the shadier side of affiliates registering with websites that do not belong to them.
As with most toolbars or extensions, which features you include are completely customizable. Another great feature for the SEM/SEO minded is the page rank button and the other Alexa rankings and Google index numbers.
Of course, there are tons of features of the toolbar that I haven’t even explored! So go check it out at www.SEOquake.com and tell me what your most useful feature of the toolbar is!

IP Address:
- Every computer connected to the Internet must have a unique address known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The IP address is a numeric address written as a set of four groups of number separated by dots, for example 130.102.42.17. The address provides a unique identification of a computer and the network it belongs to.
IP addresses are a great tool to understand when combating spam. A spammer can have multiple email accounts or online handles to spam your website with, but assuming they’re working from one computer they only have one IP address. You can have your website admin block any IP address from being able to access your website. That way if they can’t reach you, they can’t spam you.
If you’re running a company with many computers on a network it’s also very important that your employees are not participating in questionable posting or flaming on the internet. There was a case a few years back where some Google employees were acting up on various websites during their breaks and such which resulted in a Google-wide IP ban that had to be cleared up (I wish I could find a link for you…) So be careful with IP banning but know that it’s there if you need it.

Link Glossary: Site Wide Links
Site Wide Links:
- Your link on the homepage and all sub pages of a website. Also known as ROS (Run of Site)
It’s very important to target these links appropriately. A site wide link can put your link on thousands of pages within just one domain, so it’s important that these are all relevant links to build your SEO presence.

Link Glossary: Deep Link
Deep Link:
- Linking to a webpage buried within a website. These pages are referred to as “deep” because they are often two or more directories deep within a website.
Deep linking is important to affiliate marketers. An affiliate link that goes right to the product being advertised is more likely to convert to a sale than a link that goes to a general home page or landing page. As a common linking courtesy you should always deep link for the benefit of readers to get them right to the information you are citing.

Link Glossary: On-Page Factors
On Page Factors:
- Ranking criteria that can be found on a web page. These factors include: text on the page, meta-tags, keyword density, keyword proximity, etc.
A brief word about some factors. Some people don’t seem to understand the importance of meta-tags, but they’re vital for SEO and SEM. Meta-tags increase the attractiveness of your website to search engines. Keyword density is also a must; if you are looking to improve your organic search results for a particular keyword, you must include that word in the text on your page at least 4 times as a rule of thumb.
