Online Marketing Glossary: Pay Per Click
Pay Per Click (PPC):
- A program where an affiliate receives a commission for each click they refer to a merchant’s website. PPC offers some of the lowest commissions and high conversion ratio since visitors need to only click on a link to earn the affiliate a commission.
The most common search engine utilizing PPC is Google AdWords, however some PPC affiliates are also fond of Yahoo and MSN due to the lack of saturation of the market there. The downside is that not as many consumers are using Yahoo or MSN to search than Google. Some of the most successful super affiliates are PPC affiliates.
PPC is the core of search engine marketing (SEM).

Online Marketing Glossary: Quality Score
Quality Score:
- Reflects an ad’s historical CTR, keyword relevance, landing page relevance, and other factors proprietary to Google. Yahoo refers to it as a Quality Index.
Of course getting the most links to your website isn’t always the name of the game; it’s getting high quality links. This is why spammers who link to your content aren’t helping you. The quality score of your ad helps boost it’s position on the page just as much as the amount you bid on those keywords.

Online Marketing Glossary: Client
Client:
- A software program that is used to contact and obtain data from a server software program on another computer. Each client program is designed to work with one or more specific kinds of server programs and each server requires a specific kind of client.
Okay, in plain English for those that are not uber geeks, a client is an external program that is powered and contacts the internet. Some examples: Twhirl is a client for Twitter. Trillian is a client for multiple instant messenger services like AIM, Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger), and Yahoo! Messenger. Ya dig?

Online Marketing Glossary: Spider
Spider:
- A software program that crawls the Internet by following links and indexing webpages.
Spiders are the basis of all search engines. Google, Yahoo, and MSN utilize these programs to index the content throughout the net. This is why the debate between nofollow and dofollow links and their effect on search indexing rages on.

Online Marketing Glossary: AdSense
AdSense:
- An advertising program run by Google enabling website owners to display text and image advertisements. Revenue is generated on a pay-per-click basis. Google uses its search technology to serve ads based on website content and users’ geographical location.
AdSense is held as the golden standard of search marketing, above rival search engines Yahoo! and MSN. There are several gurus out there Joel Comm who write books on how to use AdSense with the highest effectiveness to generate revenue. I won a copy of his latest eBook AdSense Secrets 6 from blogger & super affiliate Zac Johnson, but I have yet to read it. Which is probably why my all-time AdSense earnings (ok all time is only the last couple of months) are sitting at a jealousy-inducing $6.56!

Cribbed Content for June 27th
Surprisingly enough, this week is flying by for me. It seems like a slow summer week, but at the same time I’ve been awfully busy with some new projects at work and some thoughts circling in my head about a new website I may tackle soon. The idea is all there, but I have to flesh it out and, really, decide if I have time to do it! Here are your links for this week – the word around the campfire in online business.
- Once again, the affiliate marketing industry attacked as douchebags. And by people who call themselves professionals, no less. Shawn Collins did all the lashing out necessary in his blog Consultants Can Fix Affiliate Marketing.
- Congratulations to Lisa Picarille & Revenue Magazine for winning the Performance Marketing’s Most Vocal Advocate Golden Link award at this week’s Linkshare Symposium. It was worth is for her to be able to say “Sorry, Jangro”. If you don’t get the reference, go to www.SorryJangro.com
- Just yesterday on the heels of Google partnering with Yahoo and more talk of a potential Microsoft bid on the company, Yahoo officially announced their reorganization plans. In laymens terms, they’re taking some time to get their shit together 🙂
- More confusion is being perpetrated about the PMA by Shoemoney. Try doing some research next time before declaring something is a scam with shady intentions. Affiliate Classroom is NOT running it, they’re just providing a website and vehicle for it. Other companies are providing resources as well.
