Online Marketing Glossary: Pay Per Lead
Pay Per Lead (PPL):
- A program where an affiliate receives a commission for each lead that they generate for a merchant website such as completed surveys, contest or sweepstakes entries. Pay per lead generally offers midrange commissions and midrange-to-high conversion ratios.
Merchants typically use this model when they want to follow up with leads to complete the sale themselves. They take the pressure of conversions off of the affiliate and take it on themselves, usually with follow up via email campaigns or salespeople.

Online Marketing Glossary: Pay Per Impression
Pay Per Impression (PPI):
- An advertising pricing model in which advertisers pay based on how many users were served their ads.
This isn’t used as often since there can be third party interference in counting impressions. I’ve been told that search engine crawlers can interfere with the impressions, although I’m honestly not sure how accurate that is.
If you know a program that uses PPI, share!

Viral Marketing:
- The rapid adoption of a product or passing on of an offer to friends and family through word-of-mouth (or word-of-email) networks. Any advertising that propagates itself the way viruses do.
Viral is growing, no pun intended. Traditionally this has been referred to as word-of-mouth, however with the advent of our dear interwebs here, viral can mean the spread through video, email, social networks, blogs, etc.

Opt-in Email:
- Email information that the recipient explicitly requests such as a newsletter or eZine.
This is the best way to comply with CAN-SPAM guidelines – always ask your newsletter or email recipients to OPT IN! If they asked to receive the emails, you cannot get in trouble for sending them.

Online Marketing Glossary: Pay Per Click
Pay Per Click (PPC):
- A program where an affiliate receives a commission for each click they refer to a merchant’s website. PPC offers some of the lowest commissions and high conversion ratio since visitors need to only click on a link to earn the affiliate a commission.
The most common search engine utilizing PPC is Google AdWords, however some PPC affiliates are also fond of Yahoo and MSN due to the lack of saturation of the market there. The downside is that not as many consumers are using Yahoo or MSN to search than Google. Some of the most successful super affiliates are PPC affiliates.
PPC is the core of search engine marketing (SEM).

Online Marketing Glossary: Nanopublishing
Nanopublishing:
- An online publishing model that uses a small-scale, inexpensive operation to reach a targeted audience, especially through blogging. Sometimes communities of shared interest emerge quickly online, such as PaidContent.org and Gawker.com
To be honest, I don’t have a lot of experience dealing with nanopublishing. Although it seems to me that this is just blogging to a super targeted niche audience. Thoughts?
C’mon, someone with more expertise in the area of nanopublishing school us!
