Online Marketing Glossary: Cost per Click

Posted on Jun 18, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Cost per Click (CPC):

  • The cost metric for each click to an advertising link.

glossary bookI remember this type of advertising was all the rage in the early part of this decade, but has since fallen out of favor since the qualified leads are not as reliable or bountiful.

Online Marketing Glossary: Cost per Aquisition

Posted on Jun 16, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

glossary bookTo begin, isn’t it sad that I’ve just NOW got around to reading Issue 22 of Revenue Magazine?! I think our subscription might have run out since I got this copy from the stack that editor Lisa Picarille brought to last week’s BAAMC meeting.

Regardless, I’ve let my glossary series’ go once the link series was done. I just haven’t found another good list of definitions to share with you. But here’s a beauty, all online marketing related terms. So this starts the series, first the term and definition, then how this affects me so far and my take. Let the fun begin!

Cost per Acquisition:

  • The cost metric for each time a qualifying action, such as sales and registrations, takes place.

Most affiliate programs use this model. Many retail merchants prefer to pay for performance to guarantee that they’re making money while paying commissions. The frequently used abbreviation CPA, however, doesn’t mean cost per acquisition, so watch out.

Link Glossary: Outbound Links

Posted on Apr 23, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Outbound Links:

  • A link that points away from your website.

Outbound links are a great way to receive some link love from the recipients, but be careful. The more outbound links are on a webpage, the less value the links have. You don’t want to make the outbound links more attractive than your own content or visitors will not stay on your site long.

A good tip when placing outbound links is to make sure they open in another window or tab instead of redirecting the visitor completely away from your website. To do this, add TARGET=”_blank” within the HREF tag in the HTML to open the link in a new window.

This concludes the Link Glossary series. If you have any glossary set request ideas please email them to me at blog@trishalyn.com or just leave a comment, of course!

Link Glossary: Authority Pages

Posted on Apr 21, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Authority Pages:

  • Web page with many unique domains linking in to it.

Home pages tend to have more authority as most people are prone to link their visitors to the general website they want to share with them instead of a deep linked page. Authority is an excellent tool in your SEO efforts as it raises your page rank and increases your traffic. The more domains link to you, the more are likely to link to you.

Link Glossary: IP Address

Posted on Apr 18, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing | 2 comments

IP Address:

  • Every computer connected to the Internet must have a unique address known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The IP address is a numeric address written as a set of four groups of number separated by dots, for example 130.102.42.17. The address provides a unique identification of a computer and the network it belongs to.

IP addresses are a great tool to understand when combating spam. A spammer can have multiple email accounts or online handles to spam your website with, but assuming they’re working from one computer they only have one IP address. You can have your website admin block any IP address from being able to access your website. That way if they can’t reach you, they can’t spam you.

If you’re running a company with many computers on a network it’s also very important that your employees are not participating in questionable posting or flaming on the internet. There was a case a few years back where some Google employees were acting up on various websites during their breaks and such which resulted in a Google-wide IP ban that had to be cleared up (I wish I could find a link for you…) So be careful with IP banning but know that it’s there if you need it.
