Online Marketing Glossary: Contextual Advertising

Posted on Jun 27, 2008 in Marketing |

Contextual Advertising:

  • The term applied to ads appearing on websites or other media where the ads are selected and served by automated systems based on the content displayed by the user.

glossary bookGoogle has been a mastermind at contextual advertising in the last few years. These ads are very effective because the user is already interested in the particular topic, then relevant ads are served to them. It’s usually a more targeted, easy sell.

Many other advertising networks are working contextual ads that automatically link keywords into their advertising repertoire.  This allows for directed keyword ads with little work from the webmaster.

Newsletter Writer’s Block

Posted on Jun 26, 2008 in Marketing |

resellersAnyone who’s been in charge of writing content for a newsletter can feel my pain.  I’ve been trying to brainstorm some topics for our Reseller Newsletter, and I’m drawing a blank.  While I’ve got a ton lined up for our Affiliate Newsletter, the topics just don’t cross over.

A reseller is defined as “A person who is authorized to sell someone else’s goods and/or services.”  We definitely have tons, but what do these people want to know about?  What good tips and advice can be given to a graphic designer or print broker looking for a resource on how to resell printing?

brainstormI admit – I’m new to writing a newsletter.  I’ve often thought about starting one for my other sites, but what would I talk about month after month?  It’s sometimes hard enough to come up with blog topics, let alone an entire extremely focused newsletter.  I give those e-mail affiliate marketers out there a lot of credit.

I’m officially open to suggestions!  Let’s do some online brainstorming here in the comments.  What would you want to know more about if in this position?

Commission Rate:

  • The rate of income an affiliate receives for generating a sale, lead, or click throughs to a merchant’s website.

glossary bookMost commission rates, by and large, are percentage based when using the CPS model.  Most click through programs or lead gen programs, however, use a flat fee to pay out on leads and clicks.

Online Marketing Glossary: Tracking Method

Posted on Jun 25, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Tracking Method:

  • The way a program tracks referred sales, leads, or clicks.  The most common is by unique Web address for each affiliate or by embedding an affiliate ID number into the link that is processed by the merchant’s software.

glossary bookThis link is the lifeblood of affiliates.  Some smaller networks base the tracking ID within the link on the user name of the affiliate.  Larger networks with a greater number of affiliates use a unique user ID or website ID number to track links.

Cafepress Shows No Mercy to NY Affiliates

Posted on Jun 23, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Yet another merchant has washed their hands of NY based affiliates.  I just received an e-mail from Cafepress:

As you may know, the State of New York recently enacted new legislation that addresses tax registration, collection and remittance, which challenges the CafePress affiliate business model.

Due to mounting uncertainly over these new laws we will no longer be able to support affiliates residing in the State of New York, effective July 1, 2008.

While CafePress has no tax nexus in any states other than California, Nevada and Kentucky we feel it wise to discontinue our affiliate business in New York State at this time.

Regrettably, our hand was forced into making this difficult business decision, and we openly acknowledge the loss of income this means for our New York affiliate partners. Should circumstances around this law change we will eagerly reconsider this decision.

Effective July 1, 2008 CafePress affiliate agreements with all New York residents will be terminated.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Of course I’m not affected, but in an effort to stand tall with my NY brothers and sisters, I’m seriously considering not promoting this program anymore.  Truth be told, I’ve never shown any sales with it as it’s just on some secondary web properties, and I do love their services.  I haven’t reached a personal decision yet.  So this makes me sad that they’ve gone this route.  Alas, poor Cafepress, I knew them well.
