Commission Junction: Happy 10th Birthday

Affiliate network Commission Junction is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary today.  They are one of the top affiliate networks with thousands of affiliates and hundreds of advertisers, including one of New Edge Media’s client’s PrintPlace.com. From their announcement today:

“The dedication of all our teams to putting our clients first contributes to our longevity,” said Kerri Pollard, General Manager of Commission Junction. “Many Internet-based companies that were founded in the dotcom heyday of the last decade are no longer around. The fact that we are still successful after 10 years is a testament to the fantastic partnerships we have with our clients.”

I’ve personally been working with Commission Junction since the end of 2007 and I’ve had very few problems with them, mostly related to internal IT issues on the advertiser end and their reporting.  I do wish the reporting was better, but otherwise it’s a great network to get exposure on with a wide range of advertisers for an affiliate to choose from.

Online Marketing Glossary: Link Bait

Link Bait:

  • A useful, entertaining, creative Web content or Web tool that encourages website owners to link to it.

glossary bookA lot of bloggers do this - write a post that has a headline that’s just RIPE for linking back.  Create some controversy to get your blog linked to.  Or, just create some damn good content to pass along for others.  There’s nothing wrong with this; it’s a skillful art that some people have mastered and some haven’t.

Online Marketing Glossary: Super Affiliates

Super Affiliates:

  • The best affiliates in a program based on performance and earnings, usually the top 1%, who generate the majority of revenue for a program.

glossary bookI’ve also used this term to refer to an affiliate who is well known across multiple programs to run a super successful affiliate site participating in many programs.  Such well known super affiliates include John Chow, Zac Johnson, Connie Berg, Mike Allen, and Amit Mehta.

Online Marketing Glossary: Dayparting

Dayparting:

  • The ability to specify different times of day - or day of week - for ad displays, as a way to target searchers more specifically.  An option that limits the serving of specified ads based on day and time factors.

glossary bookThis is used by many PPC affiliates to control their spend by tightly showing ads only when they know their target audience is going to be online.  For example, you wouldn’t want to show ads targeting teens during the day when they’re at school - it’s a waste of budget.  Instead use the tools available to show those ads only during after school and evening hours when that target audience is most likely to be online.

Happy Halloween!

This will be a short & sweet version since I know I have stuff to do to get ready for my Halloween Shenanigans this evening, and I’m sure you do too!

  • Jamie Birch wrote a great article for affiliates on his blog titled Why Aren’t They Accepting My Application? I did nod, and I think this is a must read for any affiliate, whether they’re just starting out or have been around for a few years.
  • I attended a Marketing Sherpa teleseminar on Email in a Downturn: Looking Ahead to 2009.  It was pretty insightful and I recommend checking out the slides for any  email marketer.
  • Julie Vazquez has been named Blogmistress of Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas.  She will be the liaison between the Summit staff and those of us hanging in the bloggers room.  Press pass people only, please.
  • BlogRush is shutting down.  I’m so not surprised, as you’ll remember my break-up with them.  Viva la Entrecard!
