Online Marketing Glossary: Distribution Network
Distribution Network:
- A network of websites or search engines and their partner sites on which paid ads can be distributed. The network receives advertisements from the host search engine, paid for with a CPC or CPM model.
To be completely honest, I don’t have an example of this or any experience. If you do, please share it in the comments so we can all learn from YOUR expertise! You have all weekend to “school” us!

Online Marketing Glossary: Geographical Targeting
Geographical Targeting:
- The analytical process of making decisions on the regions and locales on which a company should focus its marketing efforts.
This is second nature to most marketers, and really on some level is purely common sense. If you own a local jewelry store, it does no good to advertise on national television. Use your marketing and advertising budget to target local consumers on the local network affiliates, billboards, buses, and more traditional regional advertising.

Online Marketing Glossary: Minimum Bid
Minimum Bid:
- The least amount that an advertiser can bid for a keyword or keyword phrase and still be active on the search ad network. This amount can range from $0.01 to $0.50 or more for highly competitive keywords, and is set by the search engines.
You must remember to keep money in your advertising account to meet these minimums. It’s a terrible feeling to see that a top performing campaign has been shut down because you’ve failed to meet the minimums. Most networks offer tools to assist in managing these minimums and avoiding any problems if you have to take an extended absence from monitoring your campaigns.

Online Marketing Glossary: AdWords
AdWords:
- Google’s text-based advertising system. It is cost-per-click (CPC) advertising and publishers pay only when users click on their ad. It has cost-control features that can set daily budget and limits.
Many businesses use AdWords heavily to improve their rankings in search engines. Some companies have entire teams devoted to search engine marketing and related search engine optimization. On the other hand, some smaller businesses rely on outside firms to handle all their SEM efforts.

Online Marketing Glossary: AdSense
AdSense:
- An advertising program run by Google enabling website owners to display text and image advertisements. Revenue is generated on a pay-per-click basis. Google uses its search technology to serve ads based on website content and users’ geographical location.
AdSense is held as the golden standard of search marketing, above rival search engines Yahoo! and MSN. There are several gurus out there Joel Comm who write books on how to use AdSense with the highest effectiveness to generate revenue. I won a copy of his latest eBook AdSense Secrets 6 from blogger & super affiliate Zac Johnson, but I have yet to read it. Which is probably why my all-time AdSense earnings (ok all time is only the last couple of months) are sitting at a jealousy-inducing $6.56!

Online Marketing Glossary: Contextual Advertising
Contextual Advertising:
- The term applied to ads appearing on websites or other media where the ads are selected and served by automated systems based on the content displayed by the user.
Google has been a mastermind at contextual advertising in the last few years. These ads are very effective because the user is already interested in the particular topic, then relevant ads are served to them. It’s usually a more targeted, easy sell.
Many other advertising networks are working contextual ads that automatically link keywords into their advertising repertoire. This allows for directed keyword ads with little work from the webmaster.
