Link Glossary: Off Page Criteria

Posted on Mar 28, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing | 2 comments

Off Page Criteria:

  • When a search engine ranks pages by using data that is not present on the web page itself. This could be the presences of a directory listing, or the number and quality of inbound links to a page.

This just goes to show that you need to build your link profile with more than just the links on your page. A great way to do this is to get out there and respond to blog comments. But don’t just spam them with your link – join the conversation and really participate. It won’t take that long out of your day and will be worth it in the long run.

Where Online Meets Offline

Where Online Meets Offline

Offline vs. OnlineI should talk about this topic more, but online is just SO fascinating and I’ve been immersed in off line for the last 4 years so it’s routine to me. Since we discontinued our old poorly performing affiliate program at the beginning of February, I’ve been focused on growing our new Reseller Program and much more improved Affiliate Program. We decided, as I’m sure we’re legally bound, to pay out all pending commissions, regardless of whether or not they met our minimum threshold. This meant 400+ checks being processed by accounting, then printed, then signed, then put into envelopes, then posted, then actually put into the mail. This took about a month to get through the internal systems and the checks were sent out a couple weeks ago.

Since many of our affiliates in the old program had long abandoned the program, a lot of checks are coming back unable to be delivered. I’ve been contacting people and resending the checks as I get new addresses, and with every check I’m re-sending I’ve been throwing in one of my business cards. I realize today that this is the epitome of online marketing (affiliate payments) meets off line marketing (business cards).

It just goes to show that you can’t keep exclusively to one medium or another. There’s such a vast audience out there for your product or service – and they’re not all going to be able to be found in one place. It’s important – maybe now more than ever – to integrate your direct mail marketing with landing page testing. Put your produced commercials for television onto the web and get a piece of the viral marketing cookie. Remember the old adage “don’t put all your eggs in once basket” and don’t put all your money into PPC or direct mailing.

Diversify your marketing efforts and remember that just because you’re an internet geek, not all your customers are.

Link Glossary: FFA Link Farm

Posted on Mar 26, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

FFA Link Farm:

  • A link farm ffa or (Free For All) are farms where anyone can add a link. Many of these ffa/link farms have been banned.

From what I’ve been noticing they seem to have been replaced by directory listings. These are nearly free for all’s, but they do involve some moderation from the webmasters to filter out blatant spam or inappropriate content.

Mecha Googlezilla – AdManager Launched

Posted on Mar 13, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Google is quick on the draw – it was only days ago that the deal for Google to buy DoubleClick was finalized and today Google’s Inside AdSense blog let the cat out of the bag.

They say it best, so straight from the horse’s mouth:

Ad Manager currently addresses the ad management and serving needs of publishers with smaller sales teams and effectively complements the DoubleClick Revenue Center, which is focused on publishers with large sales teams. We’re excited to add DART for Publishers to our suite of products, and we’re committed to the continued development and enhancement of DoubleClick’s offerings.

So basically all of the internet marketing industry’s speculation earlier this week about what this means has been swiftly answered. Sort of.

It’s still not clear the fate of affiliate network Performics, a DoubleClick company, and whether they’ll stick around or if it’ll be eventually swallowed. Personally I think it would be silly for them to absorb Performics. Instead they should pretty much do what DoubleClick did when they initially bought Peformics – just append the name.

Coming to an internet near you – Google Performics?

Google Buys DoubleClick – Googlezilla Attacks!

Posted on Mar 11, 2008 in Rambles |

It’s official! Google has closed the deal and purchased online marketing agency DoubleClick, who also run affiliate network DoubleClick Performics. There are already graphics up on the DoubleClick and Performics homepages announcing the merger. According to Performics it’s business as usual and the two companies will work independently for now.

There’s no word yet on how this merger will affect Google’s amazingly successful AdWords or the ever growing Performics, both tools of the successful affiliate. It’s easy to speculate that eventually both will be rolled into one mega-monster network offering PPC, CPA, and CPC opportunities for affiliates. Truth is that we just don’t know. While that seems it would be the obvious long term goal, Google is known for innovation and could completely knock our socks off with something else in store. Only time will tell!

Analytics Glossary: Sessionization

Posted on Feb 19, 2008 in Affiliate Marketing |

Sessionization:

  • Refers to methods used to define a session (includes cookies, IP address, IP+Agent and others) telling the analytics system how to measure – or not measure – a series of page requests from the same individual or browsing machine.

In order to be able to track visitors accurately, you need to make sure you’re not counting the same visitor over and over again. This is where Sessionization comes in handy. Otherwise you could be counting yourself refreshing the page after making updates 10 times and falsely inflate your data.

Be wary of your analytics software and make sure that it’s not just counting page loads or else you get a grossly inflated number.
