Online Marketing Glossary: Lead Generation
Lead Generation:
- Websites that generate leads for products or services offered by another company. On a lead generation site, the visitor completes a contact form to get more information about a product or service. The submitted contact form is counted as a lead.
While it’s easier on some levels to generate a lead than a sale since no money is involved initially on the consumer’s end, leads are trickier nuts to crack. Merchants often must batch lead payments due to the inevitable scrubs, dupes, and just bad leads.

Online Marketing Glossary: Revenue-Sharing Program
Revenue-Sharing Program:
- A program that allows merchants and website owners to increase sales. The host site links to the merchant with a banner, button or text link, for a fee. The merchant pays the website owner for increased traffic, sales and leads from the host site.
This seems like the less guaranteed way to go about performance marketing. I don’t have a lot of experience with this either, so someone out there that does… school us in what the benefit of this would be over pay per impression (PPI) models?

Online Marketing Glossary: Commission Rate
Commission Rate:
- The rate of income an affiliate receives for generating a sale, lead, or click throughs to a merchant’s website.
Most commission rates, by and large, are percentage based when using the CPS model. Most click through programs or lead gen programs, however, use a flat fee to pay out on leads and clicks.

Online Marketing Glossary: Cost per Click
Cost per Click (CPC):
- The cost metric for each click to an advertising link.
I remember this type of advertising was all the rage in the early part of this decade, but has since fallen out of favor since the qualified leads are not as reliable or bountiful.
