Online Marketing Glossary: Compensation Rate
Compensation Rate:
- The rate at which an affiliate receives money in exchange for goods or services. It is how affiliates are paid and should be stated in the affiliate contract.
Personally I’ve rarely heard this term actually used, but it basically just means how often are you paying the affiliates. Most programs and networks pay on a monthly basis, although many super affiliates who are bringing in a large revenue stream prefer to be paid every 2 weeks or every week as a normal job would pay. Considering this is their full time job for the most part, I don’t blame them for wanting to receive their commissions more often.

Online Marketing Glossary: Click Fraud
Click Fraud:
- The deceitful practice of posing as pay-per-click traffic for the purpose of generating false revenue by the affiliates serving the ads. In PPC advertising terms, it generates a charge per click without having actual interest in the target of the ad’s link.
This, like the click bot, gives black hat affiliates an unfair advantage over the honest affiliates paying for legitimate traffic. The black hat, or unethical, affiliates click on the links repeatedly or from proxies to pose as interested traffic that boosts the click rates that increases how much the affiliates get paid, but in reality these clicks shouldn’t count because they’re not individual web users interested in the product or service being advertised, which is what the merchant is essentially paying for.

Online Marketing Glossary: Click Bot
Click Bot:
- A program generally used to artificially click on paid listings within the engines in order to artificially inflate click amounts.
This is bad news for anyone engaging in PPC campaigns, affiliate or not. With inflated click amounts the prices go up, giving the larger companies an unfair advantage in keeping out their competition. Studies have shown that the users eyes are more drawn to the sponsored listings at the top of the page, so an inflated price puts the smaller businesses and affiliates at a severe disadvantage.

New Edge Media Website is Live!
At long last, the website for New Edge Media is live and operational (almost)! Go check it out immediately: New Edge Media! I started with NEM almost a month ago and it’s been great so far. We’re doing a lot of awesome things, and there hasn’t been any shortage of work for me. Right now most of my efforts have been directed towards the PrintPlace.com affiliate program, getting everything running off the ground.
We offer a lot of great services at New Edge, including Affiliate Marketing, Email Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, and Paid Search Marketing.
The blog link isn’t operational yet since our company blog isn’t quite ready for unveiling to the public just yet. We are excited to chronicle our journey as a new company in this crazy space. It’ll feature blog posts by our CEO, Brandy Eddings, as well as by our entire senior staff.
Another great development ready to unveil today is that we now have a PrintPlace.com Sub-Forum on the AffSpot.com Affiliate Marketing Forums. I hope for this to be an active place for affiliates to talk to each other, collaborate, ask questions, and have fun. I really hope that it’ll explode into a really great area for discourse among affiliates and give everyone the opportunity to get exactly what they want out of the program.
I’m so excited! Please, we’re always open for feedback so if you have any, leave me a comment!

Spyware:
- Generally refers to deceitful software that is secretly installed on a user’s computer and that monitors use of the computer in some way without the user’s knowledge or consent. Most spyware tries to get the user to view advertising and/or particular web pages.
In regards to affiliate marketing, lots of spyware programs are written by affiliate marketers participating in black hat tactics and including affiliate links in the program to display those ads to the user. A lot of anti virus programs like McAfee and Norton will block the download of spyware, but as unbelievable as it may sound, there are still people surfing the web out there with no antivirus protection.

Online Marketing Glossary: Referral Fees
Referral Fees:
- Fees paid by advertisers for delivering a qualified sales lead or purchasing inquiry.
This is a more traditional term, not so much used in affiliate marketing. Often this type of referral fee is related to the second tier of an affiliate program, where affiliates can earn a percentage of what other affiliates they’ve referred to the program have earned. Many super affiliate bloggers like Zac Johnson and John Chow have admitted that this is where a large part of their income comes from.
