Commission Junction now hosting Flash links
Any merchant working with Commission Junction no doubt logged in this morning to see this notice on the home page. More and more networks are launching new and innovative forms of creative lately, with ShareASales videos and LinkShare’s easy links, so CJ had to do something!
From their FAQ:
Flash hosting provides you and your publishers with a new type of link creative – Flash links. Flash links hosted by Commission Junction:
- Feature short, non-interactive animated banner ads.
- Automatically start, have continuous play and generally last approximately 5-15 seconds.
- Use advertiser-created ShockWave Flash (.swf) files, which are created using Adobe flash software or with other programs capable of writing .swf files.
With the first phase of Flash Hosting, you are initially allotted 15 Flasgh links, each with a 1MB file size limit.
This is pretty exciting. I’ve heard mumbles lately of CJ being stale in their creative offering, and this definitely gives them another form of link that’s new and exciting for publishers and advertisers. Personally as a web consumer I HATE auto start flash files, but that’s just me. Will we be utilizing this? Man I hope so!

Trademark Poaching:
- The act of using PPC ads to appear as though they have come from a merchant (using its trademark). When clicked on, the ad directs the consumer to the trademark owner’s site through a link that inserted the affiliate ID, generating a bogus commission for any resulting purchase.
It’s for this reason that many merchants don’t allow bidding on their trademarks. It’s easier to police when you go all or none.

If you didn’t have the privilege of being at Affiliate Summit East earlier this month and need a kick in the pants to get you moving, this is a must listen. Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark, NJ, gave a riveting and inspiring keynote address at the summit. Tears welled up, and people were moved to reach the highest they could – then reach 3 inches farther.
Mayor Booker has a real penchant for the uplifting, and while the speach was not directly related to marketing it did touch on some sales and marketing themes and was generically motivating to anyone. So whatever industry you’re in, this is a great listen. My summary doesn’t give justice to the actual recording, so please give it a listen!
Read MoreAlexa Rankings & Google PageRank
What do they mean to you? I’m never sure how much weight to give to third party rankings like Alexa and Google PageRank. Let’s review…

Interesting… isn’t it? I know that it’s a higher ranking than another site of mine, FoodAskew.net, which has a ranking of 1,147,532. To give you some scale, Google has an Alexa ranking of 2, AffiliateSummit.com has a ranking of 104,661, and Facebook has a ranking of 5.
Alexa ranks all the sites on the web based on their traffic and that’s how the ranking comes up. I guess I should be happy in the range I’m in, but what can be done to increase your ranking? More traffic, as far as I can tell.
Page Rank is another beast all together. According to Wikipedia,
PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).
Much more complicated, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to boost my page rank. I know by checking that my page rank is 0. I can’t understand it considering that I have a decent number of inbound links as well as outbound links that aren’t affiliate links. Perhaps it’s because most the links are direct post links and not to just the domain? Someone who knows more about this has yet to tell me.
So how much weight should be put on these numbers? Different people across the web say different things. I like to believe that as long as I’m putting out good content, it doesn’t matter. I focus on bringing more traffic to my site right now because the more eyes that see it, the more likely it is that they’ll come back.
But, I’m far from being an expert on this. What’s your opinion?

Online Marketing Glossary: Paid Inclusion
Paid Inclusion:
- Advertising program where pages are guaranteed to be included in a search engine’s index in exchange for payment.
The most common cases of paid inclusion happen on directories. While they allow almost anyone to submit a link, users are offered a paid solution that’s guaranteed to get their links in front of more users in a more prominent location. These links are also given more weight in terms of IT resources to make sure they’re coming up in all possible keyword searches rather than just a few or one.
