Online Marketing Glossary: Linkspam
Linkspam:
- A company attempts to place as many inbound links as possible to it’s site regardless of the context of the originating site.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen this before in practice. Uninformed manager put their stock entirely into metrics, so that inbound link metric and page rank can be heavy hitters. Professionals truly versed in proper SEO strategies know that the originating content matters almost just as much as the presence of the link.
It can be difficult to push back to overbearing and uneducated managers sometimes, so remember that you have your industry peers to help you to formulate convincing arguments for your side.

Online Marketing Glossary: Clickthrough Rate (CTR)
Clickthrough Rate (CTR):
- The number of clicks an ad receives, divided by the total number of times that ad is displayed or served (represented as: total clicks / total impressions = CTR). For example, if an ad has 100 impressions and 3 clicks, the CTR is 3 percent.
Knowing the CTR of your ads will help you to drill down & tailor your ads best to your visitors. This can only help to increase your conversions and boost sales because your visitors will see the ads that are the most relevant to your content.

Online Marketing Glossary: Trademark Poaching
Trademark Poaching:
- The act of using PPC ads to appear as though they have come from a merchant (using its trademark). When clicked on, the ad directs the consumer to the trademark owner’s site through a link that inserted the affiliate ID, generating a bogus commission for any resulting purchase.
It’s for this reason that many merchants don’t allow bidding on their trademarks. It’s easier to police when you go all or none.

Online Marketing Glossary: Paid Inclusion
Paid Inclusion:
- Advertising program where pages are guaranteed to be included in a search engine’s index in exchange for payment.
The most common cases of paid inclusion happen on directories. While they allow almost anyone to submit a link, users are offered a paid solution that’s guaranteed to get their links in front of more users in a more prominent location. These links are also given more weight in terms of IT resources to make sure they’re coming up in all possible keyword searches rather than just a few or one.

Online Marketing Glossary: Paid Listings
Paid Listings:
- Listings that search engines sell to advertisers usually through paid placement or paid inclusion.

Businesses have traditionally gone this route because it’s a guaranteed placement that’s usually featured above other listings more prominently. Many directories also offer faster processing to get the link up for paid listings than free or reciprocal listings.
